As Hudson Valley engagement photographers Megan & Kenneth, we have had the privilege of capturing countless love stories against the breathtaking New York City skyline. One question we often get from our clients is, “When is the best time of year for DUMBO engagement photos?” The answer, of course, is that any season is great! Each season brings its own unique colors and charm to the area. However, if we had to choose, we particularly love autumn and spring for their cooler weather and later sunrises.
Autumn is a magical time of year in New York City. The air is crisp, the leaves on the trees turn beautiful shades of gold and red, and the light is stunning. The soft, warm light of the sun casts a beautiful glow over the city in the early morning, making for some truly romantic and breathtaking photos. Plus, the cooler weather means you can wear cozy outfits, like jackets, scarves, and boots, which always look great in photos.
One of our favorite spots to take photos in the fall is in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The park is full of trees, and you can get some gorgeous shots of the skyline with the autumn foliage in the foreground. The nearby cobblestone streets of DUMBO also provide a great backdrop for photos, and the red and orange leaves make for a stunning contrast against the brick buildings.
Spring is also a great time of year for engagement photos in DUMBO. The cherry blossoms in Brooklyn Bridge Park are in full bloom, which makes for a stunning backdrop. The air is fresh and mild, and the light is soft and dreamy. The pastel colors of spring also make for a beautiful color palette in your photos. If you’re lucky, you may also get some shots of the beautiful magnolia trees that bloom in the area in early spring.
One thing to keep in mind if you’re planning a spring engagement shoot is that the weather can be unpredictable. It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case of rain or unseasonably cold weather. However, if you’re willing to take a chance, the reward can be some truly magical and unique photos.
While any time of day can work for engagement photos, we recommend doing your shoot at sunrise. Not only is the light at this time of day particularly beautiful, but it is also much less busy than sunset or midday shoots. You’ll have more space and privacy to explore the area and get some intimate shots without being surrounded by crowds of people. Plus, there’s something extra special about starting your day with a romantic photo shoot and watching the sun rise over the city together.
When planning your sunrise engagement shoot, keep in mind that you’ll need to wake up early to make it to the location before sunrise. However, we promise it’s worth it! The light at this time of day is soft and warm, and the city is just starting to wake up. You’ll have the opportunity to get some truly unique and breathtaking shots that you won’t be able to get at any other time of day.
Another advantage of doing your shoot at sunrise is that the area is much quieter than it is during the rest of the day. You’ll have more freedom to explore the area and get some shots without being surrounded by tourists and commuters. This is especially important if you’re looking to get some intimate and romantic shots without feeling self-conscious.
Of course, one disadvantage of doing a sunrise shoot is that you’ll need to wake up early and get ready in the dark. However, we recommend taking this as an opportunity to do something special together. Treat yourself to a nice breakfast after the shoot, or take a walk through the area after before it gets too busy.
The best time of year for DUMBO engagement photos is really up to you and your personal preferences. If you love the colors of fall and the cozy feeling of cool weather, then autumn might be the perfect time for your shoot. If you’re looking for a soft and dreamy feel with the pastel colors of spring, then that might be the perfect time for you. Ultimately, what matters most is that you feel comfortable and confident during your shoot, so choose the time of year that feels right for you.
When planning your engagement shoot, don’t forget to think about the details. Make sure you choose outfits that you feel great in and that will look great in photos. Consider bringing props or accessories that will add to the story of your shoot, like a picnic blanket, a vintage camera, or your favorite coffee mug.
Finally, make sure you work with a photographer who understands your vision and can help you bring it to life. As Brooklyn engagement photographers Megan & Kenneth, we pride ourselves on capturing the unique and special moments between our clients. We believe that every love story is different, and we work to make sure that your photos reflect that. We love working in DUMBO because the area is so iconic and full of character, and we’re always excited to help our clients capture their love against the stunning New York City skyline.
Whether you choose to do your DUMBO engagement photos in the fall or the spring, at sunrise or sunset, what matters most is that you feel comfortable and confident during your shoot. Make sure you plan ahead and think about the details, and don’t be afraid to work with a photographer who understands your vision and can help you bring it to life. We hope this post has been helpful in planning your engagement shoot, and we can’t wait to help you capture your love story in one of the most iconic and romantic spots in New York City.
