Walking around Central Park is always a good time, but during cherry blossom season it is magical! In our experience as engagement photographers in New York, we’ve seen a ton of spots where it’s just gorgeous in springtime. With our beautiful couples, we love exploring and finding whatever is in bloom on that particular spring day. Here are some of our favorite locations for engagement photos in NYC with cherry blossoms.
Famously known for its cherry trees in the springtime, Cherry Hill is one of the best places in Central Park for blossom photos. This little spot is perfect if you’re looking to avoid the crowds while still getting those dreamy engagement photos. You’ll definitely want to arrive as early as possible in the morning to get your session done. The light is gorgeous in the early morning hours and you’ll be able to capture the blossoms before they get too busy.
Bow Bridge is one of the most iconic spots in Central Park, and it’s also a great place for cherry blossom engagement photos. The light here is gorgeous in the early morning or late afternoon, and you can get some stunning shots with the blossoms framing the bridge perfectly. If you’re planning on getting photos here, be sure to arrive early to get a good spot. The bridge can get pretty crowded, especially during peak cherry blossom season.
The areas around Bethesda Terrace are perfect to capture some gorgeous, colorful spring blossom engagement photos. We love the contrast of the bright flowers against the stone steps and architecture. The light here is beautiful in the early morning, so be sure to plan your session accordingly. You’ll also avoid tons of tourists who are all there to get the same photos you’re trying to get.
The Mall and Literary Walk are two of our favorite places in Central Park, and they’re also great for springtime engagement photos. However, the trees along the promenade itself don’t necessarily bloom in pink and bright colors. Instead, they usually start off in lighter yellows before blooming green leaves. It’s a great spot to get some bright, springy engagement photos.
The peak of cherry blossom season is typically around mid-April to early May. However, the exact dates vary depending on the weather. We recommend checking the Central Park Conservancy’s Cherry Watch page to see when the blossoms are at their peak. That way, you can plan your session accordingly and make sure you’re getting those gorgeous shots you’re hoping for.
The best time of day to take your engagement photos in Central Park really depends on the location you’re planning to shoot at. If you’re looking to avoid crowds, we recommend getting there early in the morning. The light is also usually softer and more flattering in the early morning hours. However, late afternoon light can also be gorgeous, especially if you’re shooting in an open area like The Mall. That being said, there will be a lot of people there any time that isn’t early morning.
For your cherry blossom engagement photos, we recommend wearing something that is both comfortable and stylish. Since you’ll be doing a lot of walking, you’ll want to make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes. We also suggest avoiding anything too loose or flowy, as the wind can pick up and make your clothes billow around. As for colors, we recommend sticking to light and airy hues that will complement the blossoms nicely.
Here are a few other things to keep in mind when planning your spring engagement photos in Central Park. The exact dates of peak cherry blossom season vary from year to year, so be sure to check the Conservancy’s Cherry Watch page before you plan your session. If you’re hoping to avoid crowds, we recommend getting there early in the morning or later in the evening. Weekdays are usually less crowded than weekends, so that’s another option to consider. There are a lot of great spots for cherry blossom engagement photos in Central Park, so don’t feel like you have to stick to just one location.
If you’re planning to do your engagement photos in Central Park in the springtime and want to make sure you have your photographer booked, we recommend doing so at least 1-3 months in advance. Spring is one of the most popular times to get engaged, so photographers tend to book up quickly. Plus, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Getting your date booked ahead of time with your top choice of photographer is important to ensure you get the aesthetic you want.
