Drue and Sean chose a beautiful spot for their engagement session. We met them at Waterloo Village on a late summer evening, ready to capture their energy on camera. This historic village sits along the Musconetcong River in Stanhope, New Jersey. It also happens to be where they will get married, which made the session even more meaningful. As Hudson Valley and New Jersey wedding photographers, we adore this location.

Waterloo Village is a preserved 19th century canal town. Old stone and wood buildings line quiet paths throughout the property. A gristmill, a general store, and several homes still stand from the village’s early days. As Beacon wedding photographers, we love finding locations with this much texture and history.

Access to the property requires a permit for most sessions. Since Drue and Sean are getting married at Waterloo Village, arranging access was simple. We always recommend couples confirm permissions before planning a Waterloo Village engagement photos session here. It saves time and avoids any surprises on the day of the shoot.

We scheduled the session to start a couple of hours before sunset. Waterloo Village has a lot of mature trees throughout the grounds. As the sun drops lower, that tree cover blocks a good amount of light. Starting earlier gave us time to move through the property before things got too dark.

We also suggested bug spray and comfortable walking shoes ahead of time. The property covers a lot of ground, and summer evenings bring plenty of bugs near the water. Drue and Sean came prepared, which let them focus on enjoying the shoot instead of swatting mosquitoes. A little planning goes a long way at a NJ wedding venue like this one.

We began the session down by the small river that runs through the village. The water added a soft, natural backdrop for their first few portraits. Drue and Sean settled into the space quickly, laughing and talking as we worked. Their comfort with each other showed in every frame from this part of the shoot.

Next, we walked through the historic buildings scattered across the property. The weathered facades and quiet streets gave us a lot to work with. We moved from doorway to doorway, chasing pockets of light between the trees. Drue and Sean kept the mood light the whole time, dipping and spinning between shots.

As we moved through the village, we mixed in some of our favorite prompts. Drue and Sean leaned into the movement, laughing through most of it. That kind of natural interaction is exactly what we hope for during an engagement session. It photographs far better than posed, stiff moments ever could.

We ended the evening near the section of the property where their wedding will take place. This spot sits close to the on site alpaca farm and chickens. The animals added an unexpected and charming element to the last portraits. Drue and Sean got a kick out of the alpacas wandering nearby as we wrapped up.

Waterloo Village turned out to be an excellent choice for their session. The mix of water, historic architecture, and open farmland gave us constant variety. Few venues offer this much range in one property. It is easy to see why so many couples choose it for both engagement photos and their wedding day.
As a married wedding photography & videography team, we appreciate photographing couples who are relaxed and playful together. Drue and Sean brought that energy from the first frame to the last. Meanwhile, the setting did a lot of the work for us, offering new backdrops every few minutes. Waterloo Village continues to be one of our favorite locations to shoot in New Jersey.

This engagement session took place at Waterloo Village, managed by JAM Hospitality. If you are planning a session at a historic property like this one, a little prep makes a big difference. Bring bug spray, wear shoes built for walking, and check permit requirements ahead of time. We are always happy to help Hudson Valley and Catskills couples plan their own Waterloo Village engagement photos session. Reach out any time to start planning your own shoot with us.
