So you’re preparing to have a Hudson Valley engagement session. How exciting. That being said, you’re likely the type who likes to prepare ahead of time. Most people jump in without knowing what to expect, which is completely normal. That’s why we’re breaking down everything you need to know about taking engagement photos in the Hudson Valley, Catskills, and Westchester.
One of the biggest questions we get is how to prepare. Most couples have never had a professional photo session with Hudson Valley wedding photographers, so it’s normal to feel unsure. Let’s walk through the basics of how to prepare for your engagement photos in the Hudson Valley.
Our number one rule is to empty your pockets before we begin. As Hudson Valley wedding photographers, we see this all the time. Phones, wallets, keys, and other items tend to show up in photos, and there is nothing less timeless than a phone outline. Before we start taking photos, remove everything so you can move freely and comfortably.
Always check the forecast before your session. Weather in the Hudson Valley and Catskills can change quickly. Spring mornings can be cold, even when afternoons warm up. Fall sessions may start crisp and warm significantly as the day goes on. Layering is essential, especially for morning sessions, which are often cooler and windier.
It’s a great idea to clean your ring before your engagement session. If you forget, no worries. We often carry ring wipes with us. Whether we are capturing close up details or natural candid moments, a clean ring photographs beautifully.
Most engagement sessions involve some walking. Even when locations look close on a map, paths can be uneven or longer than expected. If you are wearing dress shoes or heels, bring a comfortable pair to walk in. This is especially important for riverfront paths, trails, grassy fields, and overlooks throughout the Hudson Valley and Catskills.
You never know what might come up during your engagement session. A small emergency kit can prevent unnecessary stress and help the session stay relaxed. We recommend bringing:
Tide stick
Hair ties
Chapstick
Band aids
Lint roller
Bag for phone, keys, and wallets
Comfortable shoes
Optional change of clothes
Travel logistics in the Hudson Valley are very different from the city. Some locations involve narrow roads, limited parking areas, trailhead lots, or longer walks from where you park to where photos actually begin. Cell service can also be spotty in certain areas. Leaving extra buffer time ensures your session starts calmly and on schedule.
Engagement sessions are meant to feel easy and enjoyable, not like a performance. This is your chance to slow down and be present together. You do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That is our job. Taking a few deep breaths before we begin helps you settle in and trust the process.
Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, but there are no wrong answers. We want you to wear something that feels like you. That said, certain choices can make your session more comfortable and visually cohesive.
Comfort affects everything. If you feel physically comfortable, your photos will look natural and relaxed. Shoes you can walk in, fabrics that allow movement, and clothing that does not require constant adjusting will always photograph best.
Some couples prefer sticking with one outfit, which is completely fine. Others like having two looks to add variety. One outfit may feel more elevated or polished, while the second is more casual and cozy. If you choose two looks, make sure they feel different enough to justify the change.
You never need to buy new clothing for your engagement session. If shopping feels fun, great. If not, your closet likely already has pieces that feel authentic to you. Confidence matters far more than novelty.
Matching outfits are not necessary. Coordinating color palettes and tones is usually more effective. Think complementary colors, similar levels of formality, and textures that work well together without being identical.
Winter sessions often involve layers, coats, scarves, and gloves. Some couples jump in and out of coats, while others incorporate them fully. Both approaches work beautifully.
Summer sessions require breathable fabrics and flexibility. Humidity is real in the Hudson Valley, so lightweight materials and backup outfits are helpful. Comfort should always come first.
If you plan on wearing a button up shirt, bring a backup. Coffee spills, wrinkles, and sweat happen more often than expected.
Flowy dresses and skirts add movement and dimension to photos, especially when walking, spinning, or dancing together.
If you bring two outfits, aim for contrast. Many couples pair a dressier first look with something relaxed for the second half.
Patterns are welcome. Florals, checks, and texture can photograph beautifully. Just make sure patterns do not clash between partners.
Some couples like their outfits to complement their surroundings. Softer tones work well for nature heavy locations like trails and overlooks. Slightly more structured looks can feel right for river towns, historic areas, or architectural backdrops.
Timing matters more than most people expect. We typically recommend early mornings or golden hour for the most peaceful experience and best light.
For well known overlooks and trails in the Catskills or Hudson Valley, early morning sessions are ideal. These locations become busy quickly, especially on weekends and during foliage season. Starting early allows for quieter paths and a more intimate experience.
Riverfront walks and charming town centers are usually calmest in the morning. Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends, which makes a noticeable difference in how relaxed the session feels.
Some locations offer more flexibility and allow for afternoon or evening sessions. Private properties, quieter neighborhoods, and less trafficked areas can work well later in the day. We always guide you toward the best timing based on your specific location and season.
Either way works for us! We’ll be in touch in no time at all to book in a chat with you and, yes, we’re sure Cordy and Phoebe will pop up and say hi.
