We're Beacon-based Hudson Valley & Catskills wedding + elopement photographers who love to capture natural, authentic moments for all couples in love.
If you are dreaming of an intimate and meaningful wedding day, eloping in the Hudson Valley is one of the most beautiful options. With scenic mountain views, riverside charm, and historic architecture, this region offers endless romantic possibilities. As experienced Hudson Valley elopement photographers based in Beacon, we have created this comprehensive guide to help you plan your special day from start to finish.
Eloping in the Hudson Valley gives couples the opportunity to focus entirely on each other while surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The region stretches along the Hudson River from just north of New York City to Albany, encompassing Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, and Albany counties. This diversity means you can find everything from dramatic mountain overlooks and cascading waterfalls to manicured gardens and historic estates.
Many local vendors specialize in small weddings and elopements, making planning simple and stress free. Whether you are locals or planning a destination elopement from the city, the region is easily accessible by car or Metro North train, offering a vastly different landscape just 40 minutes north of Manhattan. The relaxed pace and natural beauty make it a perfect choice for couples who want their wedding day to feel intentional and deeply personal.
Your Hudson Valley elopement can cost as much or as little as you want to invest, which is one of the greatest advantages of choosing this celebration style. Some couples plan simple celebrations with only an officiant and photographer for a few thousand dollars, while others include hair and makeup, flowers, a private chef, and dinner for a more elevated experience.
Typical costs include location permits (state parks charge around $10 per vehicle), a bouquet ($150 to $400 for a petite arrangement), officiant fees ($200 to $500), hair and makeup ($150 to $400 per person), and photography. Some planners offer all inclusive elopement packages that bundle these services together. Eloping in the Hudson Valley is generally more affordable than a New York City wedding while still providing stunning backdrops and a memorable experience.

To get married legally in the Hudson Valley, you need to obtain a New York State marriage license. You can apply at any city or town clerk’s office within the state, and the license is valid for 60 calendar days (180 days if you are active military). Both parties must appear in person to sign the application in the presence of the clerk. No blood test or premarital examination is required.
Once you receive your license, there is a mandatory 24 hour waiting period before your ceremony can take place, so plan to obtain your license at least one full day before your elopement. The fee is $40 for licenses issued outside New York City. Be sure to bring valid photo identification such as a driver’s license or passport. If either party has been previously married, you will need to provide information about previous marriages and may need certified divorce documents.
For couples who love the idea of a courthouse elopement, consider tying the knot at Beacon City Hall, where small civil ceremonies can be intimate and heartfelt. Other Hudson Valley towns also offer civil ceremony options. You will need at least one witness who is 18 or older with valid identification.

A licensed officiant is required to legally marry you in New York. Many Hudson Valley officiants specialize in elopements and small ceremonies, offering custom vows and a relaxed, personal experience. Schedule a meeting before the day to ensure you connect well and share a vision for your ceremony. Having an officiant who understands your style makes your elopement feel even more meaningful.
New York also allows for one day designation, where someone over 18 can be authorized to solemnize a single marriage on a specified day anywhere in the state. This is a wonderful option if you want a close friend or family member to officiate your ceremony. The application requires at least three business days to process.

Every season in the Hudson Valley offers a unique atmosphere for your elopement. Spring features blooming flowers and mild weather, with gardens coming alive in April and May. Summer brings lush greenery, long golden hour light, and warm evenings perfect for outdoor celebrations. Autumn transforms the landscape with spectacular foliage, typically peaking in mid to late October, making it the most popular season for elopements. Winter provides a cozy, romantic backdrop with soft light and occasional snow, plus fewer crowds at popular locations.
Many couples choose spring or fall for their Hudson Valley elopement to enjoy comfortable weather and vibrant scenery. Regardless of season, we strongly recommend weekday elopements. The Hudson Valley can be quite busy on weekends, especially at popular hiking spots where parking lots fill up and trails get crowded. Choosing a weekday ceremony ensures fewer crowds, easier vendor availability, quieter locations for more intimate photos, and potentially discounted rates from some vendors and venues.

There are countless stunning spots for elopements across the Hudson Valley. Whether you are drawn to riverside views, mountain overlooks, open meadows, or historic estates, this region has it all. As Hudson Valley elopement photographers, we have photographed at many of these locations and can help you choose the perfect setting for your ceremony.
The Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison offers panoramic views of the Hudson River with beautifully manicured lawns. The property features rolling hills, grassy fields, large trees, a gazebo, and a white fence. You can elope here from April through December, and there is a small cottage on site for getting ready. Dogs are allowed.
The Innisfree Garden in Millbrook is filled with gardens, ponds, stone structures, streams, a lake, and walking trails. It is a great elopement location for any couple who loves nature, flowers, and a romantic landscape. The gardens look drastically different each season with various plants in bloom.
The Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring creates a peaceful, storybook setting with its beautifully cultivated grounds. Opus 40 in Saugerties provides a dramatic stonework backdrop unlike anywhere else, perfect for artsy and nontraditional couples.
The Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park sits on the banks of the Hudson River, offering stunning views of the river and mountains. The manicured gardens and grand architecture make for an elegant and easily accessible location. Mills Mansion in Staatsburg offers similar grandeur with more breathing room and fewer crowds, with a massive front lawn stretching to the riverbank.
The Olana State Historic Site near Hudson is a 250 acre estate that was home to Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church. The main house features a stunning mix of Victorian, Persian, and Moorish architectural styles, with sweeping views of the Hudson River Valley and the Catskill Mountains.
The Little Stony Point Park in Cold Spring is one of our favorite spots as Beacon based elopement photographers. This small peninsula extends into the Hudson River with breathtaking views of the river, Storm King Mountain, and Bannerman Castle in the distance. The 1.3 mile loop includes an easy, mostly flat walk through the woods to a rocky cliff overlooking the river and a natural beach. Dogs are allowed, and it is accessible year round. The parking lot gets busy in warmer weather and on weekends, so arrive early or choose a weekday.
Directly across from Little Stony Point, the Cornish Estate Ruins offer a magical backdrop for sunset or evening elopements. The sunset light hits these ruins perfectly. We recommend having your ceremony at the ruins and then walking back to Little Stony Point to catch the rest of the sunset at the beach.
The Minnewaska State Park Preserve on the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County covers over 22,275 acres with stunning cliffs, three crystal clear lakes, numerous waterfalls, and lush hardwood forests. With more than 50 miles of hiking trails, it offers incredible locations for every fitness level. The Lake Minnewaska Loop is one of the most popular viewpoints, where you can stand on rocky cliffs overlooking the lake. The parking fee is $10 per car, and dogs are allowed. Pro tip: The sun sets on the west side of the lake, perfectly opposite the cliff viewpoint.
The Sam’s Point Preserve on the southern end of Minnewaska features a jaw dropping overlook, rare dwarf pine forest, ice caves, and Lake Maratanza. It provides a unique landscape for photos with sweeping views from the cliff edge.
The Bear Mountain State Park in Tompkins Cove has much to offer. Down by the Bear Mountain Inn, there is a lake, trails, and beautiful grounds. If you follow the main road up past the Inn, you will reach Perkins Memorial Tower with stunning views of the mountains and the New York City skyline in the distance. You can drive to the tower and walk down to the rocks to find a quiet spot. The Bear Mountain Bridge over the Hudson makes for incredible photos. There is a $10 parking fee, and it gets very busy on summer and fall weekends. The Inn offers lodging, a restaurant, and spa services.
The Hudson Highlands State Park in Cold Spring offers diverse landscapes from riverside paths to challenging hikes like Breakneck Ridge. Whether you are looking for river views or mountain overlooks, this park has options for every couple.
The Poets’ Walk Park in Red Hook is a romantic, gently rolling 2 mile trail offering a scenic landscape reminiscent of paintings, with open fields, wooded areas, and Hudson River views. Inspired by Romantic landscape design, the park features rustic bridges, wooded paths, and scenic vistas. The ease of access makes it perfect for a peaceful and intimate elopement.
The Kaaterskill Falls in Hunter is one of New York’s tallest waterfalls, a breathtaking two tier cascade surrounded by lush greenery. The sound of rushing water and picturesque surroundings create a captivating atmosphere. There is a viewing platform, a beautiful hike down to the bottom of the falls, and plenty of other viewing options. This is a popular destination, so we highly recommend an early morning weekday elopement for a more secluded experience.
The Bash Bish Falls on the Massachusetts border is the tallest waterfall in Massachusetts, dropping about 60 feet into a calm pool below. The falls are accessible from both Massachusetts and New York via well maintained trails. The park offers many secluded areas where couples can find privacy while enjoying the beauty of the falls.
Awosting Falls in Minnewaska State Park is a short hike from the parking lot and offers a romantic, less crowded alternative to Kaaterskill.
Storm King Art Center in New Windsor is a famous outdoor sculpture park spanning about 500 acres of beautiful hills, meadows, and woodlands. With over 100 large scale sculptures set against the stunning Hudson Valley backdrop, it offers a unique blend of art and nature. The park’s diverse terrain allows you to choose from peaceful wooded areas, open meadows with sculptures, or elevated places with amazing mountain views. It is perfect for artsy and nontraditional couples. Dogs are not allowed.
Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island in the Hudson River near Beacon is possibly the most unique location in the region. While not technically a castle, this former ammunitions storage facility looks just like one. The island can only be accessed by boat chartered by the Bannerman Castle Trust. Wedding ceremonies can take place on the island but must be pre approved, and there is a fee.
Overlook Mountain in Woodstock is a 5 mile round trip hike that rewards you with panoramic views of the Hudson Valley and Catskills. The ruins of an old hotel along the trail add a mystical touch, and a fire tower at the summit provides even more spectacular views.
The Roundhouse in Beacon is an unforgettable option for intimate ceremonies, with a stunning waterfall right outside the venue. You and your guests can stay on site, and the restaurant lounge can accommodate 30 to 50 guests. Golden hour here is stunning for portraits.

Wildflower Farms in Gardiner offers an idyllic pastoral landscape with 65 freestanding cabins and cottages. For couples seeking a simple and private elopement, courthouse ceremonies across the Hudson Valley are wonderful options. Beacon City Hall is a favorite for its charm and accessibility. Other nearby towns including Cold Spring, Poughkeepsie, and Kingston also offer civil ceremony options.
You can follow your courthouse vows with portraits in nearby scenic spots like Long Dock Park, the Beacon waterfront, or Cold Spring’s charming Main Street, creating a perfect blend of casual and romantic. As your Hudson Valley elopement photographers, we love helping couples plan these hybrid celebrations.
Flowers bring color and texture to your ceremony, even if you are keeping things simple. The Hudson Valley is home to talented florists who create stunning arrangements for small weddings and elopements.
Witch Hazel, Raven Rose, and Flora Good Times are known for crafting romantic, natural designs that reflect the region’s wild beauty. Field Trip Flowers operates a half acre flower farm and offers farm to vase packages starting at $300, perfect for couples who want beautiful seasonal flowers without full service design. Le Jardin Flower Farm is a foam free, sustainable option that grows their own blooms. Studio Attis in Orange County is another sustainable flower farm serving couples throughout the Hudson Valley.
Choose seasonal blooms for freshness and sustainability. Consider petite bouquets, boutonnieres, or floral crowns to add a touch of elegance to your celebration without overwhelming a simple ceremony.
Looking and feeling your best on your elopement day is essential. Professional hair and makeup enhance your photos and allow you to relax and enjoy every moment without worry.

Book your appointment early, especially if you are eloping during peak wedding season in fall. Ask whether the stylist travels to your location or if you will need to visit their salon.
Some couples choose to keep their elopement private and celebrate later with a small gathering. Others host an intimate dinner or reception on the same day. Both approaches can be meaningful and fun.
Hosting a mini reception gives you a chance to celebrate with friends and family while keeping your ceremony private. You might hold a cozy dinner later that evening or plan a separate party days or weeks after your elopement.

Many Airbnbs in the Hudson Valley and Catskills allow small weddings and events. Always ask permission and be honest about your plans before booking. Hosts are more likely to accommodate small guest counts under 20. Look for properties with mountain views, modern design, and unique architecture for a special experience.
Photography is one of the most important elements of your elopement. Photos may be all you have to remember the day, especially if you are keeping your celebration small and private. You want to work with professionals who understand how to capture candid, natural, and emotional moments.
As experienced Hudson Valley elopement photographers, we help couples create comfortable, effortless experiences that reflect their connection. Our documentary style focuses on real moments rather than stiff, posed photos. From Beacon to Cold Spring and beyond, we know the light, timing, and hidden spots that make your photos timeless and personal.
When choosing a photographer, look for someone whose portfolio reflects the style you want. Ask about their experience with elopements specifically, as they require a different approach than traditional weddings. A good elopement photographer should be able to help with location recommendations, timeline planning, and vendor connections.
Check location hours and whether they change throughout the year. Some gardens and historic sites are only open seasonally, typically April through December. State parks generally remain accessible year round.
Research whether permits are required. Many public parks and state lands require permits for elopement ceremonies, so call ahead to confirm requirements and fees. Some venues require pre approval and have their own application processes.
Consider bathroom access. If you are eloping at a trailhead or scenic overlook, know where the nearest facilities are located and how this might affect anyone attending.
Make reservations early for post ceremony dinners, especially if you are bringing a group. Popular restaurants book up quickly, particularly on weekends and during peak seasons.
For sunrise or sunset ceremonies, work with your photographer to determine exact timing. Golden hour light is magical but fleeting. In the fall, you may only have about an hour and a half before the sun goes behind the mountains.
