By now it’s likely you’ve picked a wedding date, venue, and photographer… or at least you’ve got a ring on your finger! Whatever the case may be, you’re ready for some super cute New York engagement photos. Whether you’re in the depths of wedding planning or just getting excited at the beginning of it, it’s always a great time for a New York engagement photography session.
Your engagement photos are one of the most fun parts of your wedding planning process. That being said, they can also be the scariest part for a lot of couples! It’s totally understandable because honestly, most people don’t love having their photo taken. But learning to pose with your New York wedding photographers is a critical part of a smooth wedding day.
That’s why we offer complimentary engagement photo shoots with every New York wedding photography package. It’s so important to us that you learn to get comfortable and have some fun with photo-taking. The engagement sessions are not exchangeable because they’re an important part of our process as wedding photographers.
You can do your engagement session in Brooklyn or any of the boroughs any time before your wedding. We’ve done shoots for couples right after they sign on with us, and we’ve done them a week out from wedding days. It all depends on what you want to use the engagement photos for. Some couples use them for save-the-dates, while others use them just to shake off the nerves.
Your engagement photos can be captured about a year out from your wedding if you want to use them for your save the dates and your wedding website. Having them a year out allows you to show photos that are from the same season your wedding will be in. For example, if you’re hosting a fall wedding, having autumn-themed engagement photos is perfect.
Honestly, some couples just want to be less nervous for their wedding day photography. That’s why they’ll book their photoshoot just a few weeks out from their wedding. It allows for us to still get to know each other better, and get some nice photos for the future. That way, it’s fresh in the couple’s mind that they felt comfortable with the camera on them.
Given how busy the city gets, it’s important to get your session time on the calendar as soon as possible. For springtime engagement pictures in Central Park, for example, our calendar gets booked up very quickly. We recommend reserving a date as soon as possible.
We do the majority of our engagement photos in the city at sunrise. This is because New York is one of the busiest places on the planet! With all the hustle and bustle of the city, we want to give you an intimate and down-to-earth experience. For many prime locations, they get absolutely packed during the day and evening, so sunrise is typically best.
As Brooklyn wedding photographers, it’s important to book engagement sessions when things will be at their most intimate. Weekday mornings are typically pretty low-key in tourist-heavy locations. Examples of these include the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and Soho. Starting your engagement photoshoot at 7:00AM on a weekday may sound exhausting, but it’s one morning and is so worth it for the experience of getting photos in empty locations.
The busiest seasons for New York engagement photography are spring and fall. This is because the city gets beautiful blossoms throughout Central Park, Prospect Park, and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens during the springtime. In the autumn, you can get beautiful foliage in your photo shoot in so many parts of the city. Booking a date during a busy season must be done well in advance to take advantage of the gorgeous weather.
New York City gets extra hot during the summertime. We’re talking makeup melting, sweat-through-shirts weather. That being said, starting out early in the morning can allow for a little bit of a breather from the heat. You can definitely do Brooklyn engagement photos in June, July, and August – but plan accordingly for the heat.
Winter can produce some of the most beautiful engagement photos. Although it’s a less popular time to take pictures with your partner, you can get some amazing results. Especially if you’re lucky enough to get snow on your engagement session in New York, that is! Keeping an eye on the weather while you keep in touch with your wedding photographers can be beneficial.
If it rains on your New York engagement session date, we can always choose a new date together. It’s important to keep our photography equipment dry, and keep you safe and well. If it’s lightly raining, we can always get out some umbrellas and take to the glossy streets of the city. It’s totally your call if it’s a drizzly day.
When it comes to choosing locations for New York engagement photography, the world is your oyster. There are the typical popular locations like DUMBO, the Brooklyn Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, and so on. You can take a look at a list of our favorite engagement picture spots in the city here.
Our engagement sessions typically last about 90 minutes. This is enough time to get multiple spots into your session within one area. Plus, it’s easy to get to know each other during this time and get friendly. With about 90 minutes, you also won’t get too exhausted during your session and not want to keep taking pictures.
In about 2-3 weeks from your photo session, you’ll receive your gallery of images. We offer high-res files so you can use them personally however you need to. Plus, you’ll have printing options directly within your gallery in case you need to order prints.
We’re so excited to capture this joyous time in your life! Let’s figure out when and where you want to have your New York engagement photography session. We’ll work with you to make you feel comfortable. Reach out and let us know what you’re thinking for capturing these happy moments.
