We met Claudia and Steven at Little Stony Point State Park for an engagement photo shoot on an overcast day in September. As Hudson Valley engagement photographers, we always get excited when a couple picks this park. It gives us river views, wooded trails, and a rocky beach all in one session. This engagement session ended up being one of our favorite shoots of the late summer.

We started the session at the main overlook above the water. Overcast days are our favorite for engagement photos because the light stays even and soft. There are no harsh shadows to fight, so we can focus on Claudia and Steven instead of chasing sunlight. They were relaxed from the first frame, laughing between poses and leaning into each other naturally.

From the overlook, we moved onto the trails that wind through the park. Little Stony Point has a mix of wooded paths and open rock faces that change the backdrop every few minutes. Claudia and Steven walked hand in hand while we captured candid moments along the way. Their energy felt easy and unforced, which made the walking portraits some of our favorites from the whole shoot.

The tree cover added another layer of texture once we got deeper into the trail system. Overcast skies filtering through leaves create a soft, diffused glow that flatters almost every skin tone. We used gaps in the canopy to frame Claudia and Steven against the river in the distance. This kind of engagement photo shoot works best when the couple is willing to explore, and they were.

We finished the shoot down on the rocky beach along the Hudson River. This spot at Little Stony Point gives us wide open water views and a completely different feel from the wooded trails above. The overcast light held steady the entire time, so the beach portraits came out just as soft as the ones at the overlook. Claudia and Steven waded near the water’s edge for a few final frames before we wrapped.

Little Stony Point continues to be one of our go-to spots for pre-wedding photo shoots near Cold Spring. It offers enough variety in one small park that we rarely repeat a composition. The overlook, trails, and beach each bring their own mood to a session. For couples planning an engagement session in the Hudson Valley, this park delivers a lot in a short walk.

We photographed this session in September, right as the trees were beginning to shift. If you are considering Little Stony Point for your own shoot, we recommend booking before the leaves are gone. Fall color adds warmth to the trail portions of the park, and it disappears quickly once the season turns. Reach out early if a specific week matters to you.

Claudia and Steven’s session is a good example of what an overcast day at Little Stony Point can look like. If you are drawn to soft light, river views, and a mix of wooded and open terrain, this park is worth considering. We photograph engagement sessions throughout the Hudson Valley and are always happy to talk through location options. You can view our engagement photography work here and reach out anytime.

We are grateful to Claudia and Steven for trusting us with their engagement photos. Sessions like this one remind us why we love documenting couples outdoors. The Hudson Valley gives us so much to work with throughout the year, and Little Stony Point is consistently one of our favorite places to shoot. We cannot wait to see what their wedding day brings.
